The European when he started running was somewhere near the entran-
ce to the street. I saw 4 firemen came from a steam launch. 2
of the 4 ran forward and the other 2 held up the man fallen out of
the ricksha.
(Witness examines prisoner closely). I did not see prisoner at all
on that morning. I did not recognise the fireman as being the 2
men I saw going up the street but I saw 2 firemen come with a man
under arrest. It was the prisoner. The man who lifted up the cur-
tain of the ricksha and ran behind was tall and stout. Not very
fat but rather tall.
On Saturday I was taken up to the gaol by Mr. Brutton (Solicitor)
I was taken to a row of about 10 Chinese inside the gaol. Various
officials about. I then picked out the prisoner. I had not seen
him since I saw him under arrest on the Praya. He was not one of
the 3 men who crossed the road before the shot was fired.
Cross-examined.
When the prisoner was brought back by 2 firemen and a Chinese
Constable was holding him. I did not see him taken away as I went
away to my tiffin. There were other men on the scaffolding besides
me further up. I don't remember any person on the same scaffolding
as I was told to work first in one place and then in another,
I had been working there about a month. I know the appearance of

there were other masons of my trade working on the scaffolding.
I don't know if they saw what happedad. I understand my master w28
informed by the solicitors as to whether any coolies were at work
on that side and as I was at work on that side I was asked to make
a statement to the solicitors. It was about a week ago, I went to
solicitors' office and gave a statement. My master took me there.
Chan Fau the foreman took me there. I had told nothing about it
before to anybody. I would not dare to talk about it. Would you?
None of the other werkmen talked about it.
Re-examined.
When foreman made enquiries, he said were you not working on
that side of the pavilion. I said I was. When I was taken to Brutton's office I saw him, and this statment was then taken by him. There were 4 or 5 men working in the scaffolding.
