at my desk by the side of the window. I heard a report. I thought
it was a cracker. Somebody on verandah said some thing. I got up
walked on verandha and looked over the railing. I first saw a
European with a stick running towards Queen Victoria Statue from
the Praya also 1 or 2 Chinese firemen. I then looked towards
Statue Pier and saw a ricksha with a man lying in the shafts. I
then looked towards the Bank and I saw a man looking like a coolie
running towards the Bank on the pavement on the side of Wardley
Street near the Bank garden. I watched him until he disappeared
round the corner of the bank in Wardley Street. I looked up again
and I saw a man being brought back from the same direction between
2 firemen followed by a European.
When I first saw the European and the 2 Chinese firemen they were
all running. There were some more Chinese following in the rear.
I did not notice anybody in front of the European. When I saw the
coolie ruming I saw nobody else running except the European and
the 2 firemen.
I came to you about this about 10 this morning. I telephoned for
the ambulance.
Cross-examined (Plan put to witness).
I put a cross where I saw the European and the firemen as far
arest me but whether on
as my memory goes. The European was neare
the road or pavement I cannot say.
(Marked plan shown to jury).
I don't say I saw everything that happened in this locality on
that day. What impressed me was that the coolie was absolutely
alone.I am not sure whether the European was on the road or pave-
ment. The 3 were all abreast when I saw them as far as I remember.
I did not observe whether the 2 firemen drew ahead nor which side
of the statue they ran nor whether they were joined by others,
nor whether they caught any others up. I cannot say whether the
fireman's statement is correct that he ran up past the European.
It was a sunny day. I did not observe the man throw a revolver
over the railings in the course of his flight.
I am in Reise & Co. One of the jury is in the same office. I have
not mentioned it to him the morning. Mr. Bristow was also on the
