to the salaries of the officers of the Colonial Audit
Department stationed in Hongkong.

be best to accept your suggestion that I should discuss the matter with Sir E. Stephenson when in England.

Sir E. Stephenson has not touched on several points which I regard as too important to be ignored in such a discussion and to which I have already alluded in previous despatches.
(1) As pointed out in my despatch of 28th February, 1921,
paragraph 3, the extraneous duties on which the Colonial Auditor is employed occupy about one-fourth of his time. We are therefore paying him £900 to
£1000 for three-fourths of his time, which is equivalent to pay at the rate of £1200 to £1333.60.8d
a year.
(2) Both the Assistant Auditors are very senior officers
