A judicial inquiry into the incidents on the Taipo, Read, near Shatin,
on March 3rd,,which culminated in loss of life, was opened at the
Magistracy on Thursday, March 9th,
His Worship, the Senior Magistrate,Mг.J.R.Wood, in his capacity as
Coroner took his seat at 2.20 p.m.

The following had been warned for Jury service: Mr.G.M.Dodwoll,
ir.Chau Sui Xi,Mr.D.HI.Cameron.Hr.F.C.Hall Mr.A.H„Ferguson and
Mr.V.L.Loosk.

His Worship, This is an inquiry into the death of a man named
Tam Shui Piu which occurred on, I think, the 3rd, of this month on
the Taipo Road. Seeing that the cirommstances of this doath are
closely cameotod with the circumstances of the recont strike of
seamen I shall ask gentleman who haw attended for this jury to
inform me, before I draw any nos,whether they have been in any
way connected with the negotiations between the shipowners and the
Seamen's Union. It is very necessary, in the public mind, that this
inquiry should be free from all bias and if there are any such
gentlemon on the list I will excuse them from the in-uiry.
r.Chau Sui Hi, I ask to be excused because I have been working
hard for the past two weeks in comection with the strike question. Fie Torship. I oxcuse you. Any other gentlemen?
No one making reply,Mr.Chau Sui Ki's name was withdrawn and the other
namos placed in the ballet box. The first three drawn farmed the
jury. They were:

The jurors,having taken the oath, appointed Mr. William Lawton Leask
to act as their foreman,

accommodation of the Court will bo if you will please take your
seats on the Benah and sit en ny right and so leave the table to
be used by the solicitors attending.
