PROMOTION DESIRED I have become acclimatized to Hong Kong after nearly 16 years service there and I like my work there. My reason for making thisapplication is to get to England if possible so as to avoid separation from my family my children have reached school and further I believe the age for retirement in England is 60 insta of 55 so that I could put in another 5 years service. A legal appointment in the Colonial Office would suit me should one become vacant in the near future, provided I could be allowed to draw suit per annum, I do not know what the pension scale is at home, but presume my past service would be taken into account, and I should not lose on this head. I would however be prepared to lose a little on salary at first as the price of avoiding separation. I should also become liable to income tax in England, but I should not have to keep up two homes one in England and one abroad.
* Acting appointinents are not to be entered here, but may be mentioned ou the next page.
If the offoar holds more than one office, full particulars of each must be given.
H private practice is allowed, the estimated value should be stated.
The value of a Colonial appointment depends upon so many circumstances besides the salary that the Secretary of State ofteu cannot judge what would be acceptable to an officer. Applicants for promotion should therefore, in their own interest state as precisely as possible what they desire, either specifying certain appointments, or at least mentioning the Colonies to which they would or would not be willing to go, and the amount of salary which they think they may reasonably expect.
