My dear Meo,
You asked me the other day whether in the
forthcoming census in Hong Kong, the opportunity
would be taken to ascertain the number of girls and
children who are living in households under the
adoṛtion system. The suggestion was recently made
to us that we should give telegraphic instructions
to the Governor to obtain this information.
replied, however, that it was now too late to suggest
any change of the arrangements which will now be
complete for taking the census. We have, however, asked the Secretary for Chinese Affairs in Hong Kong,
who is now in this country, whether he can let us
know what information will be available from the
census as to the number of adopted girl domestics
and where they live. We have not received his reply
yet, but then we do, I will let you know further.
