Dear Sir John: -
If you have not already received it direct from
your representative in China, would it interest you to
have a copy of the contract between the Chinese Government and the Federal Telegraph Company ? If so, I shall be very
pleased to have one sent to you.
We are anxious to keep the Legation informed of the
present position resulting from the various discussions and
letters that we have exchanged with regard to the Cable
Could you clear up one point for me?
negotiations.
When you called here on June 9th. you left with me copies
of various telegrems from Peking and included one headed
"Proposed joint telegram to Peking". May I take it that
that telegram was sent off as it stends in the copy you
gave me? And if so, might I know the date ?
Finally, am I right in believing that the attitude
of the Cable Companies on the whole question is as follows:-
A. They aim at the continuance of the right to
control and work the existing oable between Shanghai,
Chefoo and Taku: end also to work the new oable which the
Chinese Administration propose to lay between Shanghai
and Chefoot
B. They aim at the exclusive right to lay and work,
en behalf of the Chinese Administration, any additional
cables required by the traffic between Shanghai, Chefoo
and Taku:
C. They aim at the right to connect Swatow when the
proposed triplicate cable is laid between HongKong and
Shanghai.
I shall await your reply before considering the
tenour of the instructions that should now go to Peking.
Yours sincerely,
(Signed) V.Wellesley.
