I directed by the Hurquesa lju of Kedleston te
transit herewith oogy of a despatok frm Xe Majesty's
Minister at Faking reporting on the present position in
regard to opium production in China, and to draw the
atlantion of X7, decretary Hontagu to the statements regard
ing the muggling of opium from Yusmoen to China (paragraph
8) and the muggling of Indian opium to Janking via Tsingtao
(paragraph 7).
2, His Majesty's Minister is being instructed, should
ha soa na objestion and should the information be
sufficiently reliable, to bring the action of the Governor
of Kano, se reported in paragraph two of his despatch, to
the notion of the Chinese derarmment with a request for m
Anmation.
3. With regard to the final paragraph of Bir B.Alston's
despatch, he is being informed that it is considered prmature
at present se recmsider the existing system of opium reperta
by Kis Majesty's Consuls in China, which are found to be
highly instructive and useful to the various departments of His Majesty's Gernrnment concerned with the question.
