A light bridge has been thrown across the Tumen, used only the Canadians are. by the Japanese military, The gendarmerie arrested me at Kainei on my way back-taking me, I suppose, for a spy. I was conducted to their barracks, and detained for an hour or so until I had established my identity."
This, coming from a foreign source, is about the best defence we have yet seen of the invasion. The writer speaks Chiness and was in a position to get information at first-hand. So far as the quartering of troops is concerned, everything is done by the Japanese in an exemplary manner, but it appears to be equally true that when they are on the war-path there is a good deal of indiscriminate killing, and "teaching a lesson." Naturally the lesson is all the better enforced by the demonstration that prompt submission and obedience will secure immunity and even profit. The proceedings of the Chinese soldiers is traditional and does much to explain the lack of militant patriotism in China.
