I am directed by dari Uurzon of Redleston to transit to you herewith copy of a despatch from His Majesty's Minister at Peking forwarding copy of a letter from the Chairman af the Shanghai British Chamber of Commercs on the subjest of the aplum traffic in China, and to suggest that a copy of that despatch and its enclosure may be communicated to Sir M, Delevingne in his capacity as British Representative on the Advisory Committee to the League of lɩtions on opium matters,

Previous despatches from Hiu Xajesty's Representatives in Chine, copies of which have been forwarded to the Home Office from time to time, will have showa how serious a situation has been created by the widespread recrudescence of cultivation of the opium poppy in that country; and from the correspondence enclosed in the Foreign Office letter !0,7 969/330/10 of Xaroh 23rd, 1921, Mr.Beoretary Shortt will be aware that Bir Dalston has recently been instrusted to address to the Chinese Goverment a formal official protest against their culpable inefficiency in regard to this matter,

I am also to enclose a copy of the reply which has bea sent to Sir B„Alaton's present despatch.
