The only other foreign firms which are so widely distributed throughout the cities of China are the British and American Tobacco Company and Lue Singer Sewing Machine Company.
Geographically speaking, Hong Kong and Shanghai are the pillars of the British position. Economically speaking, our principal assets are our commercial and industrial position at Hong Kong, and our preponderance hitherto in trade, banking and finance, in railway construction, shipping and marine engineering and our important share in the cotton industry of Shanghai.
