I am commanded by My Lorde Commissionere of the Admiralty to acquaint you, for the information of the Secretary of State for the Colonies, that the Naval Commander-in-Chief, China, has reported that the Colonial Government of Hong Kong propose to take in hand at once a scheme for the reclamation of
an area between the Naval Ordnance Depot and East Point.
2.
The scheme entails the straightening of the Queens Road, and involves the demolition of the Naval Canteen premises which are the private property of the officers and men of the
Fleet.
The Naval Commander-in-Chief has been in communica-
tion with the General Officer Commanding, China, in regard to
obtaining a site for the erection of new Canteen premises, and
an area of land in War Department occupation in front of the
Dockyard is considered the most suitable.
4. After further discussion, however, both the Naval
and Military Authorities are now of opinion that the establishment
of a Union Jack Club to include Hevy, Army, Volunteers, Ex-Service
Men, and Government employees, and to provide certain facilities
for Indian soldiers, would beat meet the case.
5. So far as the Navy is conce med the site above referred
to is the most suitable for the Club, as if built further away
it would detract from its value to the Fleet.

The land in question is Colonial Military land, and
My Lords are informed by the Army Council that the consent of
