Enclosure

577

INTERNATIONAL WOMAN SUFFRAGE ALLIANCE.

British Overseas Committee.

London, W.C.2, 18th May, 1921.

The Attorney-General,

Hongkong,

China.

Dear Sir,

The British Overseas Committee of the International Women Suffrage Alliance is deeply concerned by the reports reaching it of the conditions prevailing in Hongkong in regard to Child Adoption, which in many cases appears to us to differ very little from Child Slavery. The position as admitted in replies to questions in Parliament appears to us to be a very grave blot on British Overseas administration, as we are glad to know that you yourself stated that further powers were required for dealing with this evil.

We therefore beg you to inform us whether,

as a Committee of British women now enfranchised and there- fore personally responsible for the administration in Hongkong, we can do anything to awake the interest of the powers that be to this scandal, and could press for a speedy reform.

We should be glad of an official answer from you, and in addition should be grateful if you could give us the names of any women in Hongkong personally interested in the rescue of these children, or of any Society working among them.

(Sd.)

Youre, &c., Margery Corbett Ashby,

Recording Secretary.
