DOMINION OF NEW ZEALAND
Dear Mr. Churchill,
249
PRIME MINISTER'S OFFICE
Hotel Cecil. W.C.
14th July 1921.
I have received the following telegram from the
Acting-Prime Minister at Wellington, in connection with the appointment of an European interpreter for Western Samoa:-
"Wellington. July 13th. Gover-General
telegraphed Governor Hong-Kong 13th June asking for assistance re appointment of Euro- pean interpreter Cantonese qualification for Western Samoa, Kindly influence Secretary of State for Colonies expedite appointment. Present situation serious owing to Chinese Consul disaffecting labourers and total incapacity of present Chinese interpreter by assault of Secret Society. Labour transport probably leaving Hong-Kong for Apia direct about end of July.
I shall be extremely obliged if you will take any
action which will expedite the appointment as desired by the Governor-General of New Zealand. I notice that Sir Francis Bell
mentions that the transport of Chinese labour will probably be
leaving Hong Kong for Apia about the end of July, but my latest
information shows that it will be more likely to be some time
during August.
Yours faithfully,
4 Many
The Right Hon. Winston S.Churchill, M.P. Colonial Office. SW.1.
