degree of comfort and dignity to which they
are entitled. The average age of officers
joining this branch of the service is about
26 years.
It would therefore follow that
an officer should be in receipt of a salary
of not less than $500.00 per mensem in his
4th. year of service.
The responsibilities and expenses of married
officers increase as their children grow up,
as it is necessary in time to send them to
England to be educated, which in many cases
necessitates the up-keep of two separate
establishments for a number of years. We
would, therefore, request Your Lordship to
institute a scale of progressive salaries on
the lines submitted.
Under the revised scale of emoluments the
majority of officers are now on their maximura
salary and have to look forward to periods
ranging from 11 to 23 years further service
without any increments. As there is only one
executive post in this branch of the Service,
that of Principal Land Surveyor, it will be
seen that only a very small percentage of
officers can hope to eventually attain this
position. The highest position that the
majority of officers can aspire to is that
of First Class Surveyor, and in view of this
fact we would respectfully request that the
rank of First Class Surveyor be regarded as
a supernumary rank with a suitable maximum
and that promotion to this class be
automatic, one year after attaining the
maximum salary of the Second Class, subject
salary,
