7. Many of these schemes never materialize. When however one is adopted, the Executive Engineer dealing with it is entirely responsible for preparing the necessary specificatims and quantities to enable Contractors to submit a tender, and, on acceptance of a tender, is further responsible for supervising the work, certifying for the necessary payments in connection therewith, and for arranging the multifarious difficulties and side issues with the Contractor, the Public or the Lot Owners, etc., which are the necessary accompaniment of any work of

importance.

8. Whilst the above covers the general scope of an Executive Engineer's work some of them are more particularly engaged on routine work dealing with the Running Upkeep and Maintenance of the general utilities of the City and Colony than

in continually carrying out new work. Amongst such are:-

The development of the works included in the above mentioned posts involves however from time to time the inception and execution of a considerable amount of new work in the form of important extensions as well as the continuous running of Workshops, Quarries, Pumping Stations, &c., &c., employing large numbers of Workmen and Coolies.
