Alleged Cruelty to Children. June 1920.

Chinese woman charged.

1. At the Magistracy or June 16th a Chinese woman wes charged with

cruelty to two servant girls.

It is alleged that the women beat the girls so badly that they had to be sent to hospital for treatment. (Hong Kong Laily Press)

At the Magistracy, October 17th 1919, two Chinese women wore charged before Mr. N. L. Smith, this afternoon with conspiring with others not in custody, to defraud a woman of the sum of $120.

Mr. McElderry of the s.C.A's office prosecuted.

The complainant stated that on August 7th she bought a girl as daughter from the second defendent. She paid 120. A deed was executed, and it was signed by both the Lefendants, the first being the go-between. Witness was told that the girl was the daughter of second defendants older sister, and that she had lost both of her parents. Finally she was persuaded by the defendants to have her as a bought daughter. The second defendant then said that the girl was sensible, and if she turn bad, she would hand her back the money. On the morning of August 8th, when her son got up, he discovered that the girl had disappeared.

She was told, and a search for the girl was made.

The case was continging as we went to press.

A Chinese women was charged at the Magistracy on July 15th 1920,

by Mr. S. B. McElderry of the Chinese Secretariat, with the ill- treating of a servant girl, eight years of age.

Mr. F. E. Nash appeared for the defence.

The prosecution alleged that the woman burnt the child all over the body with a lighted paper.

According to the medical evidence the scars might have been caused by fire or by some corrosive acid.
