It is difficult to get into touch with real Chinese life here on account of the language difficulty in the first instance, and the retiring nature of the real Chinese. Those who push themselves forward and who are most in evidence are the Eurasians. They have more push and a better command of English. Many of them, as of the returned pure Chinese student class, are somewhat dis- gruntled on account of the social barriers between them and Europeans. Questions such as European reservations are used to stir up trouble from time to time.

On the other hand the pure Chinese are jealous

of the influence of the Eurasians with the Government.
