RESTRICTED [REL 30 MAR (D)]

The law of the Colony does not recognise the existence of any title to the slabiment of a domestic servant first of all purchased female mui tsai. According to the custom of purchasing female domestic servants, but the law of the Colony does not recognise the purchase.

It is enquired whether her late husband contributed to the pensions fund and whether there was any fund available from the sale of his effects against the purchase of mui tsai.

A report from the Office of the Colony states that there have been no attempts within the Colony to deal by legislation with the question of "mui tsai", and that the universal practice in this matter remains unchanged throughout China.

My undersecretary, Mr. Beckett, has informed me that the late Mary by she contributed to the pensions fund but not to that of widows.

I am to inform her and to add that there are no funds available from the sale of his effects.
