Chinese woman charged.

At the Magistracy on June 16th, a Chinese woman was charged with cruelty to two servant girls.
It is alleged that the woman beat the girls severely that they had to be sent to hospital for treatment. (Hong Kong Daily Press)
At the Magistracy, Oct. 17th, 1919, two Chinese women were charged before Mr. N.L. Smith, this afternoon with conspiring with others, one being still at large, to defraud a woman of the sum of $120.
Mr Mc Elderry of the S.C.A.'s office prosecuted.
The complainant stated that on Aug. 7th, she bought a girl as a "daughter" from the second defendant. She paid $120. A deed was executed, and it was signed by both the Defendants, the first being the go-between. Witness was told that the girl was the daughter of the second defendant's older sister, and that she had lost both of her parents.
Finally, she was persuaded by the defendants to have her as a bought daughter. The second defendant then said that the girl was sensible, and if she turned bad, she would hand her back the money.
On the morning of August 8th, when her son got up, he discovered that the girl had disappeared.
She was told, and a search for the girl was made; the case was continuing as we went to press. (China Mail)
