Dear Mr. Cooke,
I am obliged to you for your letter of the 26th. When I left the Colonial Office, I had barely time to reach the other end of Victoria Street by 4.30 to keep a special appointment.
Unfortunately, I have nearly every minute engaged next week. I have conferences on Monday; my Committees meet Tuesday and Wednesday, and I go to Manchester on Thursday. I leave for Amsterdam on Tuesday of the following week, and I shall be away about 7 or 8 days.
Possibly by that time Mr. Beckett may have found out whether anything has really been done in connection with the slavery cases put before Mr. Long in 1917.
I have written to Mr. Long, and probably he will take steps to clear himself of responsibility for the delay which has alreadj occurred.
