TO THE RIGHT HONOURABLE 3ECRETARY OF STATE for the
COLONTES
THE FOLLOWING HUMBLE PETITION is
respectfully submitted on behalf of
the OFFICERS OF THE HONG KONG CIVI
SERVICE now in receipt of Pensions,
YOUR Petitioners desire to direct attention
to the greatly enhanced cost of living which obtains
now in comparison with the pre-war period and to the
inadequacy of the amount of the Pensions granted to
meet the present cost especially after the deduction
of a heavy Income Tax.
THEY would point out that the cost of living in
this Country has gone up at least 100% and it is
generally recognised that the sovereign will not
return to its pre-war, value, at all events, for many
years.
THEY submit that a very strong case existe for
making suitable additions to pensions already granted
THEY THEREFORE HUMBLY PRAY that their
Petition may receive your sympathetic
consideration and your Petitioners
will ever pray etc.
DATED the
310-
day of January 1920.
