Mr. Falk being desirous of obtaining command of one of the

Company's ships, lodged a Petition for Naturalisation in September

1917 with the Governor of Hong Kong, a copy of which together with

copies of Declarations of himself and of Messrs) Sutherland and Heron

in support, accompanies this letter.

In October 1918 Mr. Falk's Solicitors in Hong Kong were

informed by the Colonial Secretary that H.M.Secretary of State for

the Colonies had notified the Government of Hong Kong that he was

unable to authorise the issue of a Certificate of naturalisation

to Mr. Falk,

Mr. Falk informs us that in October 1917 several of the

Company's ships having been requisitioned by the British Government

as Transports, he was specially appointed Chief Officer of one of

these Transports and was so employed until about February 1919.

tells us that he informed the Authorities at the time of his Swedish

nationality, but no objection was raised to this employment in that

respect but he was warned that if he was captured by the Germans he

would run the risk of being shot.
