Sir,
With reference to Fr. Grindle's letters of the 3rd June last (19822/20) and of the 21st July (33724/20), and to my letter of the 27th August in regard to the vacancies in the Education Department of Hong Kong for ten Assistant listresses, I am directed to state that, after careful consideration of the circumstances of the case, it appears to the Board that, it will be difficult, if not impossible, to recruit suitable candidates for these posts unless the commencing salary is raised to about £300 rising by annual increments to £400. The difficulty of attempting to recruit candidates under the present conditions is shown by the fact that only one appli- cation for these posts has been received since the Selection Committee interviewed the four rejected candidates referred to in my letter of August 27th.
I have the honour to be
Sir,
Your obedient Servant,
pro_ Robert F. Joung
