I am directed by the Inspector General to inform

you that Mr Thomas A. Howe, County Inspector, Royal Irish

Constabulary, was superannuated on 1st instant, and that a difficulty has arisen as to counting for the purpose of pension in this Force a portion of his service during which he acted

as Deputy Superintendent of Police at Hong Kong. He was seconded for service at Hong Kong, at the request of your Department, from 9th September 1897 until 3rd November 1898.

Your letter notifying his temporary appointment to the post

A copy of a statement made by Mr Howe on the subject is at- tached for your information. The Inspector General has been requested by the Irish Government to ascertain from your Department whether the service of Mr Howe in Hong Kong will be allowed to reckon for pension on his retirement from

the R.I.C.
