I have laid before the Lords Commissioners of

His Lajesty's Treasury kr. Grindle's letter of the 27th November last (93965/19) and its enclosure relative to the subsidiary coinage of Hong Kong.

It appears from Er. Severn's despatch that the prohibition of export has, to a large extent, checked the loss resulting from the export to China and in these circumstances My Lords agree that no immediate steps are needed, particularly in view of the practical difficulties of recoinage.

My Lords think, however, it would be well to consider whether it might not be desirable either to reduce the fineness of the Hong Kong 20, 10, and 5 cent pieces in the near future to say 550 or to replace them all three by nickel coins. While it may be

that silver bullion will not remain at its present high

price it seems unlikely to fall to anything like pre-war Secretary of State,

prices

Colonial Office.
