My Lord,
Andreas Johnson of Aabenraa, Slesvig, who before
the war was 1st engineer on the German $/8 "Johanna" of
Aabenraa and while lying ill in a hospital at Hongkong
was interned on October 26th 1914 has applied to the
King's Government in order to obtain, if possible, com
pensation for the loss he sustained by losing through
his interment the opportunity of earning his livelihood from October 26th 1914 to October 11th 1919 when he
arrived at Vesel after having been released,
The said Andreas John :en though born at Aabenraa
- then German - on January 11th 1883 and serving on board
a German ship was never a German subject as will be seen from the two documfiets which are enclosed together with
English translations. He states that he produced proofs of not being a German subject to the Provost Karshal at Hongkong to whom he submitted his German military papers which in 1906 had been returned to him by the Authorities in Slesvig with a remirk on them to the effect that he could not serve in the German army
because he was not a German subject.
In view of these circums tane 28 my Government have
instructed me to ask whether His Britannic Majesty's
