With reference to Your Lordship's despatch Ro.23
of January 21 last (168006/10г } regarding a proposed
modification of the Agreement respecting the importation
of opium to : acne, I have the honour to revert that I have
received a Mete from the Fortuguese Government stating
that in view of the information at his disnesal the
Linister of the Colonies daes not consider that in the
⚫neider out near future a reduction can be made with grave prejudice
to the colony of bacne in the number of cases of raw spium
which that colony may import for the manufacture of prepared
opium, fer local consumption and for expert. Chèse aneunte
which have already been considerably diminished by the
Agreement of 1913, are not excessive taking into ceneider-
ation the situation of lacas itself and the state of the
spius industry in the neighbouring regions,
The Government of Laczo have been consulted on the
Eatter and as seen as the necessary information is received, the Portuguese Government will inform this Legation taking
ints due consideration the spirit which has induced this
initiative on the part of His Majesty's Government,
