With reference to your letter No.34355/20 of the

24th ultimo I am directed by Earl Curzon of Kedleston to state that His Majesty's Chargé d'Affaires at Peking has been informed by telegraph of the request which has been sent by post to the Governor of Hong Kong to take steps to amend the Hong Kong Companies Ordinance of 1915 to coincide with the China (Companies) Amendment Order in Council 1919. Copy of a despatch on the subject from His Majesty's Minister at Peking is enclosed herewith.

In this connection I am to explain that, in view of the proposals of the British-American Tobacco Company referred to in the letter from this Department of the 12th ultimo, it is not desired that any amendment order should include a provision similar to paragraph 4 of the China (Companies) Amendment Order in Council, at any rate, until this Department has been previously consulted.
