My lord,
With reference to Your Lordship's telegras No. 20 of
the 24th ultimo and to my dekpgraphic reply Bo.44 of the 27th,
I have the honour to report that l called at the Vai Chiso Pu
on January 26th by special appointment to discuss the question
of Kao 40.
1 reminded the Vice-ilinist er of our Treaty engagement s
with Portugal, and informed him that His Majesty's Government
having learned that the Chinese had sent troops and ships of
war to Kacau, had instructed His Kajesty's Consul General at
Canton to approach the Southern Government with a view to res-
training then from any aggressive sction: at the same time i
had been instructed to urge the Central Government to use all
the influence they could with the Canton Government to prevent
aggression by the latter.
Mr Ch'en Lu replied that he feared there was little
