My Lord,

With reference to Your Lordship's despatch No.222 of the 6th July, 1920, I have the honour to forward for your information the enclosed copy of a report by the Deputy Superintendent of Police on the circumstances of the death of Lance-Sergeant H. G. Johnston on the 13th January, 1918.

It will be seen that there is no clear evidence that Lance-Sergeant Johnston was killed in the discharge of his duty and in the circumstances, having regard also to the fact that the mother of Mr. Johnston is receiving from the Gresson Street Fund, referred to in Sir F. H. May's despatch No.56 of the 14th February, 1918, the sum of £2 a month which is twice the sum her son used to remit to her, I do not consider that this is a case for a grant from public funds.

I have the honour to be,

My Lord,

Your Lordship's most obedient,

humble servant,

7.2. Stubbs

Governor,&c.
