For the building and maintenance of the many wharves and piers, the heaviest baulks of Teak and Hardwoods are always used.

Box factories purchase large quantities of "China Fir" planks, which are used in the manufacture of all kinds of boxes for the packing of local products, also for heavy packing cases used by local export firms.

Hardwoods of several kinds are used in the manufacture

of "Blackwood" and ordinary furniture.

Small quantities of "Sandal Wood" (Santalum album) are used in the manufacture of ornamental boxes and in powder form for making scented "Joss Sticks".

Large quantities of the stems of Rhapis Flabelliformis. are straightened and hardened by fire heat and roughly trimmed before being exported to Europe, where they are largely sold as walking sticks and umbrella handles under the trade name of "Partridge Cane".

(3). THE ORGANISATION OF THE FOREST SERVICE.

A Forest Service is maintained by the Botanical and Forestry Department with a staff of two European Officers who fill the posts of Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent, the other posta of Head Forester, Assistant Head Forester and Second Assistant Head Forester are all filled by Chinese of fair education.

A permanent staff of three trained Foreman Foresters and twenty-one Foresters is maintained, these men do all the skilled work of the Department.

Numbers of temporary Foresters are engaged during the seasons when planting, clearing of fire barriers and similar work is in progress.

A staff of nine Forest Guards is maintained, these men have power of arrest in the case of forestry offences, and regular daily patrols of forests and Crown Land under the control
