Mr. Food was about to retire, and he suggested the appoint-
ment of a Cadet upon £700 to £800. I did not deal with Mr.
Wood's case, when commenting on Mr. Severn's proposals.
4.
Mr. Wood, who is nearly 55 years of age,
apparently no intention of retiring. His present salary is
£600, with personal allowance £70, giving a pensionable
total of £670; and, with 20% war allowance added, an
immediate emolument of £804. Sir Henry May was unable to
support Mr. Wood's former requests for an increased personal
allowance, and the information before me does not warrant a
recommendation that Mr. Wood should receive exceptional
treatment. I consider that the case would be fairly met by the grant to Mr. Wood of salary at the rate of £800 a year, personal allowance being discontinued.
As Mr. Wood is proceeding to England, I shall
be glad if Your Lordship's decision may be communicated to
him direct.
5.
I have recommended a fixed sum for Mr. Wood
in place of a graded salary, as on his retirement I propose
to suggest other arrangements for discharging the duties of his post.
