Retention of rank by Officers on the termination A.0. 376. Gen. No. of their Commissions, or on ceasing to be employed. 1918.

-1. An officer whose service has been satisfactory throughout, shall, on the termination of his commission, or on relegation to unemployment, be granted "permis- sion to retain the rank "he has held under the following conditions.

2. This retention of rank will take the place of the honorary rank granted hitherto and the decision is retrospective to the beginning of the present war.

A.-Substantive rank held while serving.

3. An officer will be given permission to retain rank equivalent to the substantive rank he held or holds at the time of the termination of his commission or on relegation to unemployment, irrespective of how long he may have held that substantive rank.

4. Temporary rank in the New Army for officers holding temporary commissions, is the equivalent of substantive rank for the purpose of granting retention of rank.

B.-Acting rank or, in certain cases, temporary rank held while serving in a special capacity.

5. An officer with a permanent or temporary com- mission, who holds acting rank or temporary rank while holding an appointment, and whose service on the active list is terminated, as the immediate result of sickness or wounds caused "in and by" the service, will be granted permission to retain the rank he held at the time of the termination of his commission or relega- tion to unemployment, or in the case of a lieutenant- colonel, reverted under paragraph 3 of A.C.I. 1251 of 1917, the rank he held at the date he incurred the disability which resulted in the termination of his com- mission or his relegation to unemployment, or he will be dealt with under the conditions of paragraph 6 below if more favourable.

6. In all other cases an officer will be given permission to retain, or be granted rank equivalent to the highest acting or temporary rank he may have held, provided that he has held that rank for an aggregate minimum period of six months.
