the authority conveyed to me in your telegram of September ist, i proceeded to South Formosa on the evening of the 9th instant, returning to my post on the morning of the
12th.
I am reporting to H.M. Office of works the damage sustained by the Consulate buildings at maping and Takow in the recent typhoon and I think it unnecessary to enter into this question here. It is sufficient to
Say that these buildings, especially that at Takow, are deteriorating very rapidly and each year, and indeed
each typhoon, decreases their value.
As regards the Takow harbour-works, I was glad to find that the description contained in my despatch
No. 43 was generally correct. The work for which
expenditure has already been sanctioned only extends to
the 4,500 feet of quay shown on the plan accompanying
my above-mentioned despatch. The open dock and extension
of quay marked in red on the plan have yet to receive
official approval. Owing to the narrow entrance, vessels
over 6,000 tons cannot enter the harbour at present, but
part of the rocky promontory on the north of the entrance
is to be removed and vessels up to 10,000 tons will then be admitted. The width of the existing entrance is only 380 feet. Then the entrance is widened, fakow will be a
