a Chinese owned

steamship applied to take out a Hongkong passenger certificate

last week. As usual in these cases, I inspected the navigation

al equipment and found it mil. The compass was elung wi th

gimballs giving a lati tudinal swing only, and no azimuth mirror

was provided, Also there was no chronometer supplied al though

the ship was going on a foreign voyage. This ship before I

passed and adjusted her had her compass properly slung in gin-

balls and was provided with a suitable azimuth mirror and also

a good chronometer, Now this ship has been looked after by a

European Surveyor who has had a long experience as master, and

this is a sample of how these Chinese ships would be sent to

Bea if not officially examined by an expert in these matters.
