With reference to your letter No.92/18 of 6th June on the subject of the advance made in Hongkong te the Reverend C.E.Swinnerton, I am directed to forward copy of a letter from the Deputy Assistant Adjutant and Quarter- -mester General, Straits Settlements, anclosing copy of a letter from the War Office on the subject.

I am to add that this Governmett is unable to accept any responsibility in this matter and to renew the request made in Mr. Maxwell's letter of 10th April and Mr. James' letter of 22nd May that the sum of £38 may be credit- -od back to this Government in the next quarterly account.
