With reference to your letter No. 1 in 2309/1917
of the 28th ultimo, I have the honour to say that I desire to emphasize that I resigned the post of Commandant, Hongkong Volun- -teer Corps, which I held for ten years from 1907 to 1917, at the request of His Excellency Sir Henry May for the convenience of
the Government to facilitate the reorganization of the Corps,
that the abolition of the post was not due to any fault of mine. This is shown by para. 3 of your letter of 10th May, 1917, wherein you state that "the change is in no wise a reflection on your capacity or on your command of the Force IXT

That at the interview with the Governor on

7th May, 1917, His Excellency definitely informed me that I would not be allowed to suffer any pecuniary loss on relinquishing the command of the Corps. This statement was referred to in my latter to you of 12th May, 1917, und, as far as I am aware, has not been
questioned.

That my immediate predecessor was paid a sala- -ry of £750 per annum, and house allowance of 8900 per annum, this Officer was seconded from the Army,
My successor, the "Administrative Command'int" Hongkong Defence Corps was granted a *Command Allowance" of £375 per annum and house allowance of 8900 per annum in addition to full Army pay and allowances, although since the re-organization of the Corps from 1st September, 1917, the Artillery and Engineer Companies have been placed under the Military Authorities, whereas I had the entire control of the whole Corps.
