With reference to the return for May supplied

by the Superintendent of Opium in liacao, I am directed to state that the S.S. "Amherst", which is shown to be carrying a large quantity of opium to Chile, called at Hongkong owing to engine defects on the 20th May, the ship having cleared for Java on the 17th May. No opium could be found on board.

I shall be glad if the matter may be enquired

into.
