Safe places are generally considered to lie in invest- -ments that are so called gold-edged securities, and both fixed deposits and shares in Banking Institutes of high reputation are generally accepted as such. Among the local Banking Establishments the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation is, as regards Customs employés, specially situated in that this Corporation is closely connected with the finances of the Chinese Customs Service and is the agency through which its officials obtain their salaries and Retiring Allowances.
As this Bank usually is the only one about the stability of which Customs employée can have first hand knowledge, they are obviously inclined to invest their old age pension capital in shares of this Corporation and to hand them to it for safe custody.
Under special arrangement the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation also has during war time,
up to China's declaration of war on Germany, continued
to pay salaries and Retiring Allowances to Customs official of German nationality and has thus been allowed to acknowledge and grant exceptional treatment.
In view of the foregoing, and as I have to rely on these shares to discharge obligations which I have had to incur on account of being deprived for near- -ly two years of my former source of livelihood in the Customs Service, as well as in consequence of absence of funda for the sustenance of my family and myself, I have the honour to apply for the restitution of the said thirty shares and the dividends accruing on them. These shares were at the outbreak of the war on the Bank's Hongkong register in my name and the dividends had been paid up to and exclusive the dividend which
