The duties consist of medical and surgical work either among out-patients or in a hospital or in any other medical and sanitary work which the officer may be required to do.

The officer appointed must agree to serve for three years, after which period he may be appointed to the permanent staff. Should he leave the service before the termination of his agreement, the passage money paid on his behalf to Hong Kong must be refunded by him. If the officer is placed on the permanent establishment his salary will be subject to deduction of 4% per annum on account of the Widows and Orphans Fund, and the right to a free return passage to England will be cancelled.
