August29th 1919.

With reference to the disturbance outside the

King Edward Hotel on the evening of August 3rd, I beg to report that I heard Police whistles blown about 10.p.m. on that night

and went to Ice House Street to see what the trouble was. I

found a crowd of soldiers and sailors in the roadway and an

American Harige in the charge of an Indian Sergeant who was taking him away. Near Messrs Shewan Tomes' offices the marine

broke away from the Indian Sergeant and ran in the direction of

the Praya. The next I saw of the marine was him in the harbour

Bergt Field dived in

and he appeared to be in difficulties.

after him and managed to get him on to a sampun about 15yards from the shore, and afterwards to Statue Wharf on the sampan.

Sergt Munroe and myself brought the marine round and then he was taken to the Central by Sergt Field in a chair,

I have the honour to: be.

Your obedient servant,
