greater hardship than its being stored in the "baggage

room" on board ship.

The prisoners of war were allowed to write letters subject to their being passed by the Censor.

The elder prisoner of war "BACH" was allowed to conduct, in one of the larger rooms, a school of instruction in languages, in which he had, including his son, eight pupils. He also held religious services in the same room.

The baggage brought by the prisoners of war "A &H BACH" was recorded in the register of baggage of prison- ers of war and was duly signed by each of them as being correct. (See Appendix 1)

No report or comment was made by either of them as to any article being missing.

The locks of their boxes were not tampered with but were intact, the keys being in their own possession. At the inspection of their baggage the boxes were unlocked by them, and each article taken out separately by them for inspection, and replaced by them after the inspection was over, and boxes locked.

Nothing was taken from them except some indecent pictures from the man BACH, which were destroyed in accord- ance with War Office instructions.

Had their baggage contained such articles as the cameras, lenses, plates or field glasses referred to they would have been discovered at the search, and would have

for been taken, in the presence of the prisoners of war, safe custody.

The only photographic articles in their possession was one camera (in canvas case) and one Kodak (in black

postcard size). These were taken separately to Australia by the Officer Commanding the escort and handed over to the Australian Authorities (see Appendix 2.)
