I am directed to forward a copy of certain paragraphs from an affidavit made by a Dr. August Gaston regarding his treatment by the Militery Authorities in Hongkong, during a period of detention after his arrest on the high seas by H. M. S. "Laurentic", while a passenger in

the S. S. "China" in 1916.

I am to enquire whether the Military Authorities have any knowledge of this Dr. Gaston. As far as this Government can ascertain, he would appear to be identical with the missionary August Bach who appears in the roll of German Prisoners of War enclosed in the letter from the General Officer Commanding marked Secret of the 20th February, 1916 (C.R.No.4677/59(a)).

I may refer in this connection to General Ventris's secret letter No. 4677/59 (a) of the 4th March, 1916, and I shall be glad to learn whether any further particulars can be given regarding August Bach's luggage.

I am, &c.,

M. FLETCHER,

Colonial Secretary.

(sd.)

P. S. I shall be glad if a report may be furnished as

early as possible.

The Deputy Assistant Adjutant and

Quartermaster General.
