Enc. 2)
Sir,
I ap directed to forward a copy of certain paragraphs from an affidavit by a Dr. August Geston in which reference is made to an offer of his services to the
Government of Indo-China at the outbreak of war,
This Government has reason to believe that Dr. Gaston is identical with one August Bach, formerly a missionary in North China, who left Shanghai in the S. S. "China" on the voyage to which the affidavit refers.
I should be glad if you would be so good es
to enquire whether either Dr. Gaston or Mr. Bach is known to the Government of Indo-Chine, what is known about him generally, and whether he volunteered his services as
stated.
I am, &c.,
(sd.) M. FLETCHER,
Colonial Secretary.
