entering our schools. It must be made unnecessary for them to seek their higher education in other than British institutions.
Now there are two ways in which the requisite standard for approved Secondary schools can be maintained: (1) by the several missions uniting forces and dividing the responsibility; or (2) by obtaining financial assistance from other than mission
funds.
There is no hope of the three British Societies in Canton uniting in a British educational effort, for, as I have said above, the Church Missionary Society is the only society that is even contemplating such educational work. But for some months past a strenuous effort has been made to bring together all British and American missions into a union plan in which all educational effort is to make its objective the Canton Christian College. This institution is not financed by mission funds.
Before the signing up is done under the union proposal,
I want to make one last effort to establish untramelled an educational plant at this most influential centre in the south which shall be really representative of the best in English education both in methode and morals.
Donations for this purpose of $1,000 each have been received from certain business firms. The Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce has undertaken to bring the proposal before the members in Hongkong. But educational enterprise of this nature becomes a national asset, and I venture to think a nation- al responsibility. To take full advantage of the opportunity now offering still further support is required.
Our plans include an expenditure of £300,000 for build- ings and equipment in the near future. Building operations should commence at once for the accommodation of at least 150 boarders besides day-boys. At the present we are hesitating to receive boys of good families for lack of accommodation. A building fund of $100,000 is required for immediate needs. If
