The ONLY school here for boys under British control

is Holy Trinity School, at present housed in rooms until recently used for the storage of coffins. Notwithstanding this heavy

handicap there are over 60 boarders in residence. It was impos-

sible to be content with this. An effort was made to secure a

position possible of development into an educational institution

worthy of our name and nationality. The Church Missionary Society has purchased a site, covering six English acres, near the Provincial Assembly Hall, outside the East gate of the city. The site is admirably adapted for its purpose. It stands high;

has a wide frontage on the main road, and is adjacent to newly projected roads in and around Canton.

I want to suggest that here is an opportunity standing

ready for a modern school, under British control, which shall be a beginning in correcting the fatal indifference of the past. St. Paul's and St. Stephen's Colleges are well know in Hongkong. At Canton, because of greater space, it is possible to aim at something better than they, and exerting a wider influence. The nucleus of a Secondary school with good connections exists. With proper backing this might be developed in a short time into a school of 300 students or more. For this buildings and staff

are required.

On the new land there is space for Primary and Second- ary schools, each with its own playground; also for a Laboratory with a certain amount of technical training for such as will not

pass on to the University.

Our educational offerts would naturally lead up to the University in Hongkong. But for those who will not go forward to University training the standard of education offered here must not be inferior to that obtainable elsewhere in and around the city. The same is true with respect to the teaching of the Chinese language. Only thus can British influence become operat- ive in the future comercial and professional life of the students
