In reply to your telegram received yesterday

evening, I replied as follows:- Fisherman reported to me

finding of body of Inspector Terrett. I saw the body lifted

from the water and looked immediately for signs of violence.

No bruises or wounds. Body in good condition, only slight

discolouration below chin. Writing. Cousins.

In accordance with your request, I have to report

the following facts.

June 5th. ▲ rumour spread early that a foreigner had

been drowned near Taichow. I discredited this statement.

About 4.30 p.m., however, a fisherman came from Paak Teung ling to the chapel to tell me that a foreigner's body had been found near his village, about nine li away from here. He handed me the passport of A. Terrett and said that the

body was found about 10 a.m. I took this man to the Magis- tracy to see Li Un Cheong and found that Leung in Cheong had come down from Tai Chow about this body. We left the magistracy about 6 p.m. and went by motor launch to the place where the body had been secured by a rope and bamboo in shallow water. To went in a boat from the motor-launch

and whilst we watched the body was lifted from the water on

to a second bost.

The body was wearing white canvas boots, green socks, no trousers or belt and a shirt of khaki colour. The men looked about my own age (44) and was heavy in build. I saw him in the water, whilst the police officer from Canton, who was travelling with the deceased identified him and then
