2.

I have addressed you separately in my

Confidential Despatch of the 7th. May on the question of

pensions generally; but I may take this opportunity to draw

attention to the fact that the readjustments of salary

which have taken place during the last twenty-five years have

resulted in a general decrease in the rates at which pensions are payable. I do not propose to discuss this matter at length, but I may quote one example to show what has occurred.

A First Class Officer who joined the Service prior to the

1st. July, 1897, draws pension at 38. 8d. to the dollar, and

after thirty years' service he would get a pension of £770.

A First Class Officer joining between the lat. July, 1397,

and the 31st. December, 1901, gets a pension of £630, at 38. Od

to the dollar, after thirty years' service. A First Class

Officer on sterling salary gets a pension of £583 6 8 after thirty years' service.

Having regard to the fact, therefore, that

the existing rates of pension are not so good as the former
