My Lord,

38038

Real 2dovERNMENT HOUSE,

HONGKONG. 26th. April, 1919.

322

I have the honour to inform Your Lordship

that I have received an application from Mr. J. M. de Castro

Basto, on behalf of himself and other Portuguese, for an

exchange of land as indicated in the plan berewith enclosed.

The site shown adjoins the new main road and lies about two

miles from Sheung Shui Railway Station in the direction of

San Tin. The land now held by this syndicate was acquired a

few years ago from a Chinese company. It originally belonged

to local Chinese farmers.

2.

Owing to the somewhat scattered nature of

the lots so acquired, which renders them unsuitable for any

building scheme, the present omers desire to surrender to the

Crown the portions coloured green on the plan, which have a

total area of 10.37 acres, and in exchange therefor to receive

from the Crow the portions coloured red, the area of which

is 16.15 acres. This exchange would be mutually advantageous,

since the green area is good high ground suitable for building,

and as such of considerably greater value to the Government

then the scattered red areas of rough hillside, which however

in their turn would be of value to the present applicants as

combining with the blue areas to give them a compact building

site. The lots left uncoloured within the red outline are

privately owned by other persons and any negotiations with

regard to them are not within the scope of the present

application. RIGHT HONOURABLE

VISCOUNT MILNER, G.C.B.,
